When a country decides to stop executing its own citizens, its normally as a result of some moral pressure or crusade – but not in the land of the free.
A report just published in the US show that executions there have decreased by twelve percent in the last year, although good old Texas still leads the way in putting its own people to death.
Apparently the main reasons appear to be a difficulty in getting hold of the drug, sodium thiopental, that is used as a lethal injection, and the high cost of putting people to death, in these tough economic times.
Strange , really – you'd have thought the Americans would have come up with cheap and easy ways of killing people, they've had enough practice !
The other slightly strange thing about this story is that the organization producing the report has the creepy name of the Death Penalty Information Center – makes its sound too much like an interstate tourist shop.
